What to Do If You’re Sent Home EarlySometimes, situations may arise where your manager asks you to leave earlier than scheduled or informs you that you’re no longer needed for your shift.
If this happens, it’s important to understand your rights and responsibilities as a worker.
Your Right to Work or Be PaidIf you were scheduled to work a specific number of hours, you have the right to fulfill your contract or be compensated accordingly.
You can politely decline an early dismissal and say that you wish to complete your contracted hours.
A Staffer’s shift is a binding agreement for both parties — the worker and the employer.
Guaranteed Four Hours of PayYou are guaranteed a minimum of four (4) hours of pay for each confirmed shift.
If the employer ends your shift early, cancels your shift, or tells you not to come to work after all, you are still entitled to four hours of payment.
This compensation should be settled immediately upon the occurrence of the disruption.
Once you leave the premises, the contract ends immediately — make sure your compensation is agreed upon before you leave or before accepting the shift cancellation.
Exceptions: Breach of ContractIf you are sent home due to a breach of contract, the employer has the right to end your shift without the four-hour guarantee.
Examples include:
Not having the required skills for the role
Causing conflicts or disruptive behavior
Being late or repeatedly absent
In such cases, the employer may lawfully send you home without compensation for unworked hours.
